Scarab is a robot in development to be used to explore the surfaces of the moon and other planets and their moons. Researchers want to develop a robot that can work properly in extreme conditions. Scarab is the first robot being developed to be functional in “perpetual darkness and temperatures of minus 385 degrees Fahrenheit.” Scarab is being tested at Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano as a simulation of extreme space conditions. Scarab will climb the rugged terrain and drill, extract and analyze samples of the soil on the dormant volcano.
